Boilers rarely fail without warning. More often they give small hints first: radiators that take longer to warm up, a pressure gauge that keeps dropping, new banging or whistling noises, a pilot light that goes out, or a bill that creeps up without any change in how you use heating. Any of these is worth looking at sooner rather than later, because small faults tend to become bigger and more expensive ones, usually in the coldest week of the year.
Some problems are quick to put right, such as a stuck diverter valve, a failed pump or a blocked condensate pipe in freezing weather. Others point to something more significant, such as a failing heat exchanger or a boiler that has simply reached the end of its life. We diagnose the fault, explain what we have found and give you a clear view of your options before any work is carried out. If our guide on boiler problems and what to check does not solve it, get in touch.

We repair most makes and models of gas boiler, including combi, system and regular boilers. Typical jobs include no heating or no hot water, boilers that lock out or show fault codes, low pressure and leaks, noisy operation, radiators that stay cold at the bottom or the top, thermostat and controls faults, and ignition problems. Where a part is needed we will tell you what it is and why, and we will explain whether the repair is likely to last.
Sometimes the honest answer is that a repair is not worth it. If your boiler is old, parts are hard to find or the cost of repair approaches the value of the boiler, we will say so and help you think about replacement, without pressure. Our guide on whether to repair or replace a boiler sets out the factors we weigh up, and our new boiler installation page explains what replacement involves.
A yearly service is the best protection against breakdowns. During a service, we inspect the boiler, check that it is burning cleanly and safely, look at the flue and seals, test the controls and safety devices, and clean or adjust components that need it. We will tell you if we see anything that is wearing out so that you can plan around it instead of being caught out.
Servicing also keeps the boiler running efficiently, which matters when energy costs are high, and many manufacturers require an annual service to keep their warranty valid. If you are a landlord, a gas safety check is a legal requirement, and we can help you keep your paperwork up to date. Our boiler servicing and repair guide explains what a service covers in more detail.
All of our gas work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers. Gas appliances that are poorly maintained can produce carbon monoxide, which is invisible and odourless. We recommend a working carbon monoxide alarm in every home with a gas appliance, and we will check yours while we are there. If you ever smell gas or suspect a leak, turn off the supply, open windows, avoid switches and flames and call the National Gas Emergency Service before you call us.
There are a few simple things you can do yourself that make breakdowns less likely. Check the pressure gauge now and then, and top up the pressure if your boiler is a sealed system and your manual shows how. Bleed radiators if they have cold spots at the top. Keep the area around the boiler clear, and in winter make sure an outside condensate pipe is lagged so that it does not freeze. If you are going away in cold weather, leave the heating on low rather than switching it off completely.
It also helps to know the basics: the make and model of your boiler, roughly how old it is and where the stopcock and isolation valves are. If you tell us these when you enquire, we can often arrive with the right parts and shorten the visit.
Customers often ask which of the three they need. As a rule of thumb, a service suits a boiler that is working well but is due its yearly check. A repair suits a specific fault in a boiler that is otherwise in good order. Replacement tends to make sense when a boiler is well beyond ten to fifteen years old, is failing repeatedly, has become inefficient or is difficult to get parts for. We will give you our view, and you decide.

Once a year is the usual recommendation. It helps keep the boiler safe and efficient, and gives us the chance to spot problems early.
Check that the thermostat is calling for heat, the pressure is within the normal range and the gas supply and power are on. Our guide on boiler problems and what to check goes through the common causes. If it still does not work, get in touch.
It depends on its age, its condition and the cost of the repair. We will give you an honest view, including when replacement makes more sense.
