Choosing the right new boiler

The right boiler depends on your home and how you live in it. The number of bathrooms, the number of people, the size of the property, the pipework you already have and the space available all make a difference. A boiler that is perfect for a flat may be wrong for a family house, and the cheapest option on paper is not always the best value in practice.

We look at all of this at a survey. We check how much heat your home needs, how much hot water you use at peak times, where the boiler will sit and where the flue will go. Then we explain what we would recommend and why, in plain English, along with the alternatives. If a different approach would suit you better, such as a heat pump or a hybrid system, we will tell you that too.

Combi, system or regular

A combi boiler heats water on demand, needs no hot water cylinder or loft tank and suits smaller homes with one or two bathrooms. A system boiler works with a hot water cylinder, which can supply several outlets at once and suits larger households. A regular boiler, also called a heat-only boiler, works with a cylinder and a tank in the loft and is often found in older properties with traditional systems.

Each has strengths and weaknesses, and we do not push one over another. Our guide to choosing between a combi, system or regular boiler explains the differences, and our new boiler cost guide explains what influences the price of a project without giving numbers that may not apply to your home.

Replacing a boiler properly

A good installation is about more than the boiler itself. We consider whether the existing pipework and radiators are in good condition, whether the system needs cleaning, whether controls should be upgraded and whether the flue position meets requirements. A smart thermostat or modern programmer can make a noticeable difference to comfort and running costs, and we will advise on what suits your household.

We also think about the long term. If you may want a heat pump in the future, it is worth choosing radiators and controls with that in mind, and we can plan for it. If your boiler is failing now, a planned replacement is usually kinder than an emergency one in the middle of winter.

Planning your installation

Good planning avoids surprises. At the survey, we agree where the boiler will go, how the flue will run, how the condensate will drain away and what needs to be done with the existing pipework. If the boiler is moving, for example from the kitchen to the loft or utility room, we explain what that involves. If you have a hot water cylinder or loft tanks that will be removed, we plan for that too.

We also talk about timing. Many people prefer to replace a boiler in the warmer months, when the heating is not needed, but it is not always possible, and we will do our best to minimise the time you are without heating and hot water. On the day, we protect floors and furniture, keep you informed and leave the work area tidy.

Why an efficient boiler matters

Modern boilers are far more efficient than older ones, and replacing an ageing boiler can reduce the fuel you use for the same level of comfort. Combine a new boiler with good controls, such as a smart thermostat, radiator valves and sensible timers, and the benefits increase. We will explain what is worth doing in your home, and what is not.

Boiler or heat pump?

For many homes, a new gas boiler remains a practical choice today. But it is worth thinking about the longer term, particularly if you are off the gas network or want to reduce carbon. Our heat pumps pages and guides explain the alternatives, and we are happy to talk through the pros and cons honestly.

New boiler questions

Can’t see your question? Send us an enquiry using the form at the top of the page and we will come back to you.

How long does a boiler installation take?

Many installations take a day or two, though it depends on the system and the work involved. We will give you an estimate at the survey.

Do I need a new boiler or can mine be repaired?

If your boiler is old, inefficient or breaking down repeatedly, replacement may be better value. We will give you an honest view.

Should I switch from a regular to a combi boiler?

It depends on your hot water needs and your home. A combi suits many smaller homes but not all. We will talk it through.

Could I fit a heat pump instead?

Possibly. It depends on your insulation, radiators and outside space. Our heat pump pages explain the options.
