More than just cooling

Air conditioning is often thought of as a summer luxury, but modern systems do much more. Most work as heat pumps, which means they can cool a room on hot days and provide efficient heating when the weather turns cold. One installation can therefore help you stay cool in summer and warm and cosy through the colder months, while also improving air quality and keeping a comfortable temperature whatever the weather.

That makes air conditioning useful in places where traditional heating is awkward: extensions, conservatories, loft conversions, garden offices and rooms that are used only some of the time. It is also a sensible option for shops, offices and other premises where temperature affects customers and staff. Our year-round air conditioning comfort guide explains the benefits in more detail.

Air conditioning for homes

In a home, air conditioning is most often used in bedrooms, living spaces and extensions that get uncomfortably warm. Warmer summers have made sleeping difficult for many people, and a quiet unit in the bedroom can make a real difference. A well-chosen system also dehumidifies and filters the air, which can help with comfort.

We help you decide where units should go, how many you need and whether a single room system or a multi-room system is better. Noise levels, appearance and position are all considered, so that the equipment is practical and as unobtrusive as possible. Our guide on choosing air conditioning for your home covers the main points.

Air conditioning for businesses

For businesses, comfortable temperatures support staff, customers and equipment. Offices, shops, salons, treatment rooms, restaurants and small commercial premises all benefit from reliable climate control. We can recommend systems that suit your layout and the hours you operate, and install them with minimal disruption to trading.

System options

Single split systems

One indoor unit connected to one outdoor unit, ideal for a single room.

Multi-split systems

Several indoor units connected to one outdoor unit, suited to multiple rooms or spaces.

Ducted and cassette systems

Hidden or ceiling-mounted units for larger spaces and commercial premises.

Comparing the options

The right choice depends on the size of the space, how it is used and what you want it to look like. We will explain the options and recommend what suits you.

Air conditioning or a heat pump?

If you are weighing up air conditioning against a conventional heat pump heating system, the answer depends on what you need. Air conditioning is excellent for cooling and for heating individual rooms. A full heat pump heating system supplies radiators or underfloor heating and hot water for the whole house. Our guide on air conditioning or a heat pump explains how to decide.

Safe, compliant installation

Air conditioning systems use refrigerant gases, and the people who install them must be qualified to handle them. Our installation is F-Gas compliant, which means the work is carried out in line with the regulations on handling refrigerants. We also test and commission the system and show you how to use it.

Looking after your system

Air conditioning works best when it is looked after. Filters should be cleaned regularly, and a periodic service keeps the system efficient and reliable. We can advise on maintenance and arrange servicing when you need it.

Choosing the right size

An air conditioning unit that is too small will struggle on hot days, and one that is too large will cycle on and off, waste energy and feel less comfortable. We size systems according to the room, its orientation, glazing, the equipment in it and how many people use it. Sun-facing rooms, conservatories and kitchens have different needs from north-facing bedrooms, and we take that into account.

Where the units go

Indoor units can be wall-mounted, floor-standing, ceiling-mounted or hidden in ducts. The outdoor unit needs good airflow and sensible access, and should be placed to limit noise for you and your neighbours. Pipework between the two is kept neat, and where possible we run it discreetly. We talk through all of this at the survey so you can see what to expect before you agree.

Energy use and controls

Modern air conditioning is far more efficient than older models, particularly when used well. Sensible temperature settings, timers and remote controls help keep running costs down, and we show you how to use them. Our air conditioning cost guide explains what affects the cost of a project and of running a system, without quoting figures that may not apply to your space.
